Don’t you just wish time would calm it down every once in a while? Because really, there are some things that feel like yesterday that really aren’t. Gilmore Girls ending, a decade ago, for example. Falling in love with Ellen Page in Juno, yup… 10 years ago. Singing our hearts out to Rihanna‘s “Umbrella.” That too was a decade ago as well. That isn’t the only jam from 10 years ago we can’t believe are old AF now. These 2007 songs are also on the list. Feel old yet?
1. Britney Spears’s “Gimme More”
2007. What a year for Britney Spears. A meltdown we’ll never forget and then a “comeback” that was as lackluster as could be at the MTV Video Music Awards. Oh man, it was bad. She performed “Gimme More” with as much energy as a retirement home. Thankfully she pulled herself out of that funk and went on to be a fierce force with her Vegas residency. Despite the shaky VMA show, the song itself is a bop.
2. Alicia Keys’s “No One”
We’d already fallen hard for Alicia Keys by the time “No One” came out. An angel with a voice to match, there was ~no one~ quite like her then, and that still stands even now. Since then, she’s been making a statement rocking a makeup-free look wherever she goes. That includes when she’s a coach on NBC’s The Voice.
3. Linkin Park’s “What I’ve Done”
The lead single off Minutes to Midnight, “What I’ve Done” resonated with the already millions of fans the band had garnered at the start of the ’00s. It even made its way to number one on the charts. In between then and now the band dropped a few more albums, but tragically lost their lead singer, Chester Bennington, to suicide in 2017.
4. Fergie’s “Big Girls Don’t Cry”
From the Black Eyed Peas to her own thing, Fergie had a lot of her own jams back in the day. None of them quite got us in the feels like “Big Girls Don’t Cry” though. A beautifully sung song and a hot AF video to boot. Oh yes, that is This Is Us‘s Milo Ventimiglia in the video. Hot then. Hotter now.
5. Sean Kingston’s “Beautiful Girls”
Remember him? He’s still around doing what he does but not at the caliber of when this song came out. “Beautiful Girls” was everywhere. We mean EVERYWHERE. There wasn’t a place you could hide from in the summer of 2007 to escape this sweet(ish) sentiment put to song.
6. Daughtry’s “Home”
Chris Daughtry may’ve lost American Idol but he proved you don’t need the title to make it. Like Jennifer Hudson and Adam Lambert, he made his own way and “Home” was one of the most played songs that year. Great, now it’s stuck in our heads…
7. Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab”
Talk about extreme talent gone far too soon. “Rehab” made us all do a double take. She was doing her own thing to her own beat like a boss. Only her reign on top didn’t last as Amy Winehouse passed away only four years later. While she’s gone, this song still lives on.
8. Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend”
She used to be so “Complicated” but we got to see a whole new side of Avril Lavigne with this one. More pop than bubblegum punk, “Girlfriend” was the definition of a guilty pleasure — especially because every harcore Avril fan was pissed that she “sold out” with this song. You loved it, but on the low-key so your friends wouldn’t know.
9. Taylor Swift’s “Teardrops on My Guitar”
It’s hard to imagine a world in which Taylor Swift isn’t one of the most popular artists. Alas, in 2007 she was just a small fish in a very large pond. Of course, we know that was short lived. Now she’s just about everywhere you turn. Then, though, she was just a country girl with her guitar singing, “Teardrops on My Guitar.”
10. Fall Out Boy’s “Thnks fr the Mmrs”
In 2007, Fall Out Boy really solidified their jump from Warped Tour darlings to mainstream babes. Kim Kardashian was in the video. Yup! Before she was a reality TV business mogul, Mrs. Kanye West and North’s mama, she was in the video for “Thnks fr th Mmrs.” We were still like, “OMG it’s the sex tape girl” then instead of, “OMG it’s Kim K!”
11. Chris Brown feat. T-Pain’s “Kiss Kiss”
A couple of years before the world saw a whole different side of Chris Brown, he was just a cute kid with major moves with “Kiss Kiss.” Then he went and put his hands on Rihanna and got canceled forever. That was just the first of many incidents that put a damper on his career. He has released music since then and even appeared on ABC’s Black-ish but his career never fully recovered.
12. Feist’s “1234”
1234″ was like an indie dream. Simplistic in nature, but so darn catchy – it even found its way to Sesame Street. Elmo and his friends did their own rendition of “1234,” and we loved that one as much as the original. You’d be wrong if you thought Feist disappeared after that hit. She’s still here and making music for herself and TV shows like Legion.
13. Gwen Stefani and Akon’s “The Sweet Escape”
When Gwen Stefani decided to step away from No Doubt, we were willing to give her a chance even though it broke our hearts. Then it got a little too weird that her army of Japanese girls behind her. Nevertheless, we all were singing “The Sweet Escape.” Where’s Akon today, we wonder?
14. Paramore “Misery Business”
What kid wasn’t running to dye their hair orange after seeing the video for Paramore‘s “Misery Business?” With a sea of neon manes, Paramore fans took them from a band on the side stage at Warped Tour to the headlining act. Over the years, the band has been a revolving door for members, but nonetheless, that band has continued to prove they are fire.
15. Justin Timberlake’s “My Love”
Thinking back, “My Love” wasn’t the absolute best Justin Timberlake song to ever exist. But hey, we can’t always have “SexyBack” and that extremely catchy tune from Trolls. With that, “My Love” remains a pretty good song that is a low-key jam.
16. Beyoncé’s “Irreplaceable”
When VH1 inevitably does an I Love The ’00s resurgence, Beyoncé, and this song will be one of the hottest topics. It just has to be. “Irreplaceable” is not only one of her best songs, it’s one of the best pop songs to ever be created. All the others can just head to the left, to the left.
17. Rihanna feat. Jay-Z’s “Umbrella”
Speaking of amazing songs that’ll be part of a look back at the ’00s… I think that it about three years to really get over the greatness of Rihanna’s iconic tune, “Umbrella.” But then after about four months of rest it was back to being our freaking jam. Then, of course, Tom Holland lip-synced to it and proved that this song will never really get old.
