Summer movie season has already begun and so far it has not disappointed. Whether you are interested in watching some superheroes save the worlds, history of war films, chick-flick comedies, or suspenseful murder thrillers, this summer serves up something for just about everyone.
The Summer big screen has already delivered with films like Wonder Woman, Snatched, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 rocking our world so far, but this is just the beginning. Here are ten highly-anticipated films that we cannot WAIT to come out.
10. Baby Driver (June 28) – How many movies are created based off of a 4-minute music video? The answer is probably not very many. However, Director Edgar Wright did exactly this by taking the concept of a music video he directed in 2003 and expanding it into a full-length film. The music video was for the song, “Blue Song” by the band, Mint Royale. According to the director, the original idea came to him over 20 years ago when listening to the song “Bellbottoms” by The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion on repeat. Although he had the idea for an entire film for years, Wright decided to test out some of his ideas on the music video before going all in. The film follows a getaway driver, who cannot do his job without listening to music, as he tries to break out of his intense and risky line of work. With a cast like Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Jamie Foxx, and Jon Hamm, this film has everything from good looks, to action packed car chases.
9. The House (June 30) – Amy Poehler and Will Ferrell team up for one of the most anticipated comedies of the summer. The duo plays parents who unfortunately realize they are unable to afford to send their only daughter off to college. In hopes to earn some quick cash, the comedians decide to open an underground casino in their family own. As we can imagine, all does not go as according to plan.
8. Spider-Man Homecoming (July 7)– For all of us superhero fans out there, two action-packed films this summer (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 & Wonder Woman) is simply not enough. Tom Holland is back as Peter Parker for a stand-alone film after making his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War. (That seems to be the thing these days, right?) Joined by talents like Michael KeatonMarisa Tomei, and Disney Channel star/Dancing With the Stars alum, Zendaya, this film combines high school struggles with saving the world action and we can’t wait to see what it has in store for us!
7. War for the Planet of the Apes (July 14) – Caesar is back in the third chapter of the critically acclaimed Planet of the Apes franchise. This sci-fi drama follows Caesar and other apes as they face an army of humans led by a cruel colonel. Written and directed by Matt Reeves, the film stars Woody Harrelson, Andy Serkis, and Judy Greer.
6. Dunkirk (July 21) – July 21 does not just mean the release of one or two highly anticipated films. It means the release of THREE films that audiences are going to be lining up at the cinema to see. But the first one on our list is directed by Christopher Nolan (the guy who gave us The Dark Knight trilogy, Momento and frickin’ Inception). Since the release of the first (and very brief) trailer for Dunkirk, Nolan fans and history buffs everywhere have been awaiting the film’s release. The story seems to be a mix of both an action thriller as well as a historical drama. Not to mention the World War II drama features One Direction heartthrob Harry Styles in his acting debut, so basically there’s nothing not to be excited about.
5. Landline (July 21) – If you have seen the 2015 comedy Oblivious Child then this film is for you. Writer-director Gillian Robespierre, writer-producer Elisabeth Holm, and actor Jenny Slate are back only this time with a story about two sisters who find out that their father is having an affair. The film is set in 90’s Manhattan and stars Jenny Slate, Abby Quinn, Edie Falco, and John Turturro.
4. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (July 21)– The third film being released on July 21 is an action packed star-studded film that takes place in a 28th-century Metropolis. To protect the human territories from an intangible evil, a team of two special operatives, Valerian and Laureline struggle to maintain order. Not only does the film star Dane DeHann and Cara Delavigne, but it also includes talents like Rihanna and Ethan Hawke.
3. Atomic Blonde (July 28) – Charlize Theron is no stranger to action-packed adventures and beating up bad guys. Just watch Mad Max: Fury Road to see what we mean. But she’s back again only this time as an M16 agent on the hunt to stop Russians with nuclear Intel. The film Atomic Blonde is set in 1989 Berlin and consists of over 100 minutes of footage of bad girl Theron kicking some serious butt. #GirlPower
2. Detroit (August 4) – Based off of the 1967 police raid in Detroit, this historical thriller is directed by Academy Award winner Kathryn Bigelow. The film dives into the Algiers Motel Incident in which three black males were killed and many others were beaten by members of the Detroit Police Department. Starring John Boyega, John Krasinski (!) and Will Poulter, this drama is one we know will have us on an emotional roller coaster. Let’s just say it’s extremely timely and hopefully will get people talking.
1. The Dark Tower (August 4) – Stephen King fans everywhere, get ready! On the same day that Detroit will be released on the big screen, a sci-fi fantasy based on the King’s The Dark Tower novels is also being released. Idris Elba, plays the last gunslinger, Roland Deschain, is stuck in an internal battle with Matthew McConaughey’s character, Walter O’Dim (known as the Man in Black). It is Elba’s duty to topple the tower, defeat the Man in Black and hold the universe together, so like, NBD, right?
