16 Celebrity Friendships That Turned Sour

Celebrity breakups are hard enough to handle, but if there’s one split that is even worse to deal with — it’s when two once-inseparable celebrity BFFs head to Splitsville. We had been living vicariously through their #BFFgoals Instagrams, lavish Snapchats of party pics and aww-worthy interviews singing one another’s praises until — boom — it all comes to a screeching halt.

A lot of the time, the cause of the feud is unknown though other times it’s front-page news. Did someone up-and-leave their band? Did they each choose different sides in a different celebrity feud? Or did one make a nasty comment in the press? Whatever the reason being the BFF breakup is, it makes us wonder if real, genuine love still exists — you know, the kind between two best friends.

Taylor Swift + Karlie Kloss

These two long-legged, red carpet-walking besties used to be extremely close. Karlie was a staple of the “Swift squad” and it seemed like nothing could get in between the two. Recently though, the duo hasn’t really been seen together and rumors are swirling that Karlie is officially on the outs with the “End Game” songstress. While there was no real concrete “evidence” of a falling out between Tay and Karlie — an Instagram caption posted by the Victoria’s Secret model changed everything. The post showed Karlie dribbling a basketball for LOVE Magazine’s advent calendar captioned with the words “Swish, swish.” As you probably are aware, Taylor’s longtime foe, Katy Perry debuted her song “Swish Swish” and many perceived it to be a direct diss track in response to Taylor’s “Bad Blood.”
Karlie quickly re-captioned the photo, but we have a feeling that she’s a little too smart to accidentally make a caption like that.

Paris Hilton + Nicole Richie

These two divas of the early ’00s were practically glued together. They co-starred in their own reality show together, The Simple Life, and often appeared at events side-by-side. Sadly, they had a falling out and stopped talking to one another — leaving one season of The Simple Life to be shot separately so the two heiresses didn’t have to interact. No one knows the exact reason why these two called it quits, but swirling rumors suggest everything from backstabbing to showing the wrong people sex tapes. In more recent years, they’ve seemed to put their feud behind them, but it’s certainly not the friendship it used to be.

Selena Gomez + Demi Lovato

These two female powerhouses started on the set of , went to Disney Channel, and are now taking on the radio waves and Billboard charts by storm. But aside from roles and albums, drama has been a big part of their lives, too. Although the two used to do everything together — including post video blogs in the mid-2000s, fans couldn’t help but notice that the pair suddenly seemed to stop spending much time together. While neither party has confirmed what came between them, apparently it was none other than Miss Taylor Swift. In a fan video that went viral, someone asks Dems “How’s Selena Gomez?” to which the “Skyscraper” singer responds, “Ask Taylor.” Woah. There’s no way that’s not a sly dig!

Demi Lovato + Miley Cyrus

Another Disney child star duo that drifted apart quickly as they grew older, here we have Demi and Miley. We all remember that infamous YouTube video of “The Miley and Mandy Show” which seemed to take shots at Sel and Dems and the vlogs that duo had posted. Junior high drama, man: random cliques forming, nasty insults thrown, just to say a faux-apology claiming that you didn’t mean to hurt anyone’s feelings. Demi has said several times that she and the “We Can’t Stop” singer drifted and stopped talking — apparently because they have nothing in common anymore. Considering Selena and Miley apparently feuded over mutual ex-boyfriend, Nick Jonas, it’s possible Miley didn’t like that Demi clearly chose SelGo’s side.

Rihanna + Katy Perry

These pop icons’ friendship seems to be so long ago that it’s hard to even remember it happened. The two have supported one another through a lot, and whether they were teasing each other on Twitter, dancing at music fests, or cozying up at an award show, they certainly seemed like they’d be BFFLs. That was until Chris Brown came back into the picture. After the R&B; guy horrifically assaulted RiRi prior to the Grammy awards in 2009, the two started becoming affectionate again and decided to rekindle their romance. In a not-totally-surprising-move, Katy did not approve of her bestie reuniting with her abusive ex.
She said in an interview to Elle UK, “I know a lot of people out there with the most detrimental entourages — they are the root of their demise,” and mentioned that she’s not one for saving celebrities anymore — leading many to believe she’d dropped Ri when she got back together with her ex. The two have been frosty AF ever since.

Kim Kardashian + Beyoncé

When two people are thick as thieves, it’s always ideal to have their SOs get along as well. When Kanye West and Jay-Z were BFF-status, Kim and Bey were spotted out together constantly — and they seemed to really enjoy one another’s company! I mean, they were both basically running the world at the time. But when their hubby’s cooled off, it seems the relationship between the two women also got frosty as well. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star reportedly sent a ton of expensive gifts to Beyoncé after the birth of her twins, but apparently Bey was having none of it and gave the gifts to the nurses at the hospital where she gave birth to Sir and Rumi. TBH, we’re hoping the drama will be squashed ASAP so that this foursome can resume their double-dates.

Jay-Z + Kanye West

…And now to the main event: the husbands. These two go way, way back. They’ve released albums together, publicly supported one another through good news and bad, and even referred to each other as “brothers” on several occasions. Fast forward a few years and the two have had a MAJOR falling out. Jay-Z and Bey didn’t even attend Yeezy’s wedding and apparently didn’t even reach out when Kim was robbed at gunpoint in Paris. Ouch. ‘Ye notoriously went on a rant during concert about how Jay fell off, and in a recent interview with T Magazine HOV said, “In the long relationship, you know, hopefully when we’re 89 we look at this six months or whatever time and we laugh at that. There’s gonna be complications in the relationship that we have to get through. And the only way to get through that is we sit down and have a dialogue and say, ‘These are the things that I’m uncomfortable with. These are the things that are unacceptable to me. This is what I feel.’ I’m sure he feels that I’ve done things to him as well. I’m not a perfect human being by no stretch.” Again, we’re hoping for a reconciliation ASAP.

Britney Spears + Christina Aguilera

Two major pop princesses producing music in the same era can go one of two ways: They become besties, release some fire music together and separately, and support each other through it all. …OOORRR they can view one another as a threat and never become the friendship power couple we’ve all dreamed of. We get it. The two grew up together on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and the two were initially quick friends. However, competition to be the greatest (and the patriarchy) eventually got to them, and Brit and Xtina’s feud ignited as quickly as their friendship once had.
In 2004, the “Genie in a Bottle” singer said in an interview, “I know Britney. She’s not trailer trash, but she sure acts that way.” Britney sent jabs back her way, saying she didn’t like how “fake” Christina was. Now, it doesn’t really seem like they give a f&%^ what the other does and that’s definitely for the best.

Dwayne Johnson + Vin Diesel

Friends and co-stars don’t always stay that way for long. Whether it’s the pressure of filming or a build up of small things that happen on set and behind the scenes, a lot of celeb friends have to take a breather from one another after working together on a major movie franchise. Plus, being constantly compared to one another couldn’t have been easy. The Fate of the Furious featured both Vin Diesel and The Rock.
Their movie characters definitely had a lot of anger and tension, but Dwayne Johnson didn’t hold back from saying that not all of it was just acting. According to Vanity Fair, Dwayne captioned an Instagram post, that has now been taken down, calling an unnamed co-star a “candy ass.” It was never confirmed he was talking about Vin, but Michelle Rodriguez, another co-star, mentioned that the two men definitely had some beef between them. In the end, Vin and Dwayne said they’re like family – and sometimes family fights.

Gigi Hadid + Selena Gomez

It’s kind of hard to stay friends when your BFF starts dating your sister’s ex. After Bella Hadid and The Weeknd called it quits, Selena and Abel started their (almost) year-long romance just three months later. While no one wants to end a friendship over ~a guy~, sadly it happens all the time. Like all good sisters would, Gigi had Bella’s back from the start and the friendship between the supermodel and “Fetish” singer fizzled out rather quickly once they had The Weeknd in common. While both are still tight with Taylor Swift, Selena recently stopped following Gigi on Insta, though Gigi is still following her. Leave it to Instagram to always pile on the drama.

Kendrick Lamar + Drake

Another duo you can’t choose between, Drake and Kendrick about as different as french fries and ice cream. The latter’s songs are often powerful stories that center around institutional racism and discrimination, while Drake fires up the hottest beats for any club or party with some pretty romantic lyrics. They’re both great artists, and sadly, you can’t say the same about their friendship anymore. They’ve been featured guests in each other’s songs and even went on tour together, but when fame and competition get to your head, it’s not pretty. Since they’ve been fighting to be on top, they’ve fired shots back in forth for a few years now, not necessarily in person, but in their songs. Talk about shady.

Pia Mia + Kylie Jenner

These two were soaking up the fame on Instagram for a bit side-by-side. Pia Mia and the youngest Kardashian-Jenner were inseparable for a time, singing on Snapchat, caught by the paparazzi going out to clubs, and smiling for selfies with fans. Recently though, the two haven’t been seen with each other at all. Their friendship seemed to just drop off the face of the earth without many clues as to why. In Pia Mia’s breakout hit “Do it Again,” she featured Tyga, Kylie’s boo at the time. The two have drifted for some reason and, although it seemed they’d briefly reconciled in the spring of ’17, things seem cold once again. Sadly, we can no longer look forward to any more fun, envy-inducing videos about their luxe lives from their Snaps.

Sofia Richie + Chloe Bartoli

You may not be familiar with Chloe Bartoli, but you will be soon enough. She’s a celebrity stylist and a long time friend of Sofia Richie’s. Here’s where it gets wild(ly uncomfortable). When Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick went on a break, Chloe entered the picture and became Scott’s hot new fling. Wait, isn’t Sofia dating Scott now? Yes, now you’re getting the picture. Because of Scott and Sofia’s new romance, Us Weekly reported that the two girls aren’t talking anymore. Sweet Yeezus, all these guys need to just stop getting in the way.

Zayn Malik + Louis Tomlinson

The downfall of the One Direction kingdom has certainly been a weird one. When Zayn announced his departure from the boy band, all hell broke loose in fangirl-world. Soon after, the rest of the boys decided they, too, wanted to pursue solo ventures and the band went on hiatus. While the four final guys parted on amicable terms, the same can’t be said for Zayn — who upped and left his group mid-tour. While we’re sure Harry Styles, Liam Payne and Niall Horan weren’t enthused about Z’s decision, the only one who voiced his anger was Louis. The two guys got into one big Twitter feud, which included Zayn’s new producer Naughty Boy and, if you needed just one tweet to give you an idea of what went down, Zayn had tweeted, “Remember when you had a life and stopped making bitchy comments about mine?” Cooooold.

Kim Kardashian + Paris Hilton

Is Paris Hilton the reason Kim Kardashian is famous? She’d certainly like to think so. While Kim rose to fame thanks to being Paris’s assistant in the mid-2000s, it’s pretty clear the two are no longer hanging on the one-on-one nowadays. In 2008, Paris said Kim’s booty was “gross” and reminded her of “cottage cheese” and walked off an interview in 2009 when asked if she was concerned Kim had become more popular than she was. While the two reunited in Ibiza in 2014, the recently-engaged heiress never hesitates to suggest that she’s the one who made Kim Kardashian famous. In a 2015 interview with Yahoo Style, she said, “[Kim and I] have always been friends. It’s nice to inspire people.” Sounds like a burn to us!

Winona Ryder + Gwyneth Paltrow

These ex-besties have a rocky past, and despite how close they were and their refusal to tell the world what the f happened to split them apart, they weren’t able to salvage the friendship they once had. Gwyneth denies rumors that their friendship ended because she stole a role from Winona that ended up winning her an Oscar (Shakespeare in Love), though… that’s definitely a possibility.
Then, in 2009, Gwyneth wrote in a post on her website Goop saying, “Back in the day, I had a ‘frenemy’ who, as it turned out, was pretty hellbent on taking me down.” She also mentioned, “I heard that something unfortunate and humiliating had happened to this person. And my reaction was deep relief and happiness.” Of course, the Shallow Hal star never mentioned Winona by name, but pretty much everyone in the world felt confident in their assumption of who the target was. The two still aren’t friends and probably never will be again. Hey — it happens!
