Celebrities are no different to us, they stop and start in relationships and sometimes get back together for good.
Since they’re celebs, their splits are often a little more dramatic than ours. And they get splashed all over the tabloids. Imagine having your relationship BS spread everywhere?! We’d die. But somehow these celeb couples managed to get together, break up, reconcile, and oftentimes even get married right before the eyes of the whole world. And if you can go through all that together, you can get through anything! Here are some celeb couples who headed to splitsville before getting back together for good!
Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler
Before these two married and had a whole bunch of adorable kids together, they broke up! The first time they attempted to take a trip down the aisle ended in them calling off their engagement and their relationship. In her book, Cavallari said that she initiated the breakup because she knew things needed to change in her relationship and there were fundamental issues that Jay wouldn’t take seriously unless she ended things. The two eventually entered couples therapy, reconciling a year after they called off their wedding. They were married soon after. Now, they have three adorable kids and thrive on communication!
NeNe Leakes and Greg Leakes
The Leakes had an interesting relationship trajectory. The couple has been together for over 20 years, so there have, of course, been some bumps in the road! In 2011, NeNe filed for divorce, later saying she wasn’t being treated the way she wanted. Their split didn’t last long, though, and the two were married again in 2013. Obviously, it was immortalized on a reality TV show! Would you expect anything less from these Real Housewives of Atlanta vets? Besides that brief time apart, the two have been inseparable for over two decades, and when you’ve been together that long, you can get through anything!
Michael Phelps and Nicole Johnson
These two were going full-steam ahead until they suddenly split in 2011. The two stayed broken up for three years before they eventually reunited! Nicole admits that there were times she hated Michael but that their time apart allowed them to appreciate each other again. They both knew that if they had tried to get married and start a family when they were together the first time around, it would have ended in divorce. But the many years apart allowed them to remember what they loved about each other and learn who they were on their own. Sometimes relationship breaks work, Y’all!
Sam Hunt and Hannah Lee Fowler
Things weren’t always perfect for this country crooner and his wife. The two were on-and-off for several years of dating, and many of the songs on his album Montevallo are about her. In fact “Montevallo” is the name of the town Hannah grew up in! He even sings in one of the songs “I’m sorry I named the album Montevallo / I’m sorry people know your name now / And hit you up on social media”! The two reunited soon after his album was released and he realized through his songwriting that he was meant to be with Hannah all along. They were married in 2017 and have been blissfully together ever since!
Snoop Dogg and Shante Broadus
When you’ve been married for as long as these two have, there are going to be some issues at some point. Especially when you take into account the fact that they got together before he shot to fame and had to navigate changes in stardom and in their relationship. The couple briefly split and filed for divorce in 2004 after what Snoop says was a period where he wasn’t appreciating her the way he should have been. We’re happy he realized that! Snoop eventually called off the divorce and the two got back together. When you’ve been together for so long, you have to keep trying! Twenty-two years after meeting, they’re still going strong!
Nick Lachey and Vanessa Lachey
Everyone remembers Lachey’s first high-profile marriage to Jessica Simpson. It didn’t work out the first time around, but he wanted to make sure the second marriage stuck. He was on the lookout for true love and someone to share a life with. He found it in future-wife Vanessa Minnillo who, crazily enough, had interviewed Nick and his ex-wife several times on MTV’s TRL! When Minnillo starred as Lachey’s love interest in a music video, they knew they had something special. But after what seemed to be a fairytale romance, the two unexpectedly split with reports that Nick was getting cold feet about another wedding. Lachey ultimately admitted that Vanessa is much smarter than him (duh!) and they patched things up. Now, they’ve got some adorable kiddos together and showed their love on national TV when competing against each other on Dancing with the Stars!
Prince William and Kate Middleton
Their royal romance wasn’t always so perfect. It was actually William’s royalty that caused a rift between these two soulmates when they broke up in 2007 after four years of dating. The pair, who had met at University, were both still finding out who they were and all the time they spent apart because of William’s royal duties was taking a toll. The breakup didn’t last long — the two were back together by the end of the year — and a royal engagement and wedding were soon to follow. The brief split allowed both parties to reevaluate themselves and what they wanted in a life-long romance. Clearly, it benefited the relationship! The two have now been married for several years and have three beautiful children.
Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo
Levine was a notorious playboy before he settled down with Prinsloo, but even in the midst of their relationship, he couldn’t quite give up his old ways. Levine broke things off with Prinsloo after a year of dating and almost immediately began dating fellow Victoria’s Secret model Nina Agdal. Their fling was short-lived, though, and reportedly Adam totally ghosted Adgal in favor of getting back with Prinsloo. Yikes. Clearly, moving on with someone else must have shown Adam and Behati how much they missed each other since they were soon engaged… and married… and have started a family together with their two kids.
Kim Zolciak and Kroy Biermann
This reality TV royalty almost didn’t make it past the dating stage! When the two got together, they were keeping their relationship way under wraps since NFL star, Biermann, wasn’t into all the attention his new GF received. But when the two were seen together and reports started swirling about their budding relationship, Kroy began feeling overwhelmed and broke up with Kim via text. Yes, really. The breakup didn’t last long at all — it was literally 24 hours before he was sending her flowers and suggesting they forget the whole thing! The two have been going strong ever since and the rest is reality TV show history! We wouldn’t recommend getting back with someone who broke up with you over a DM, but sometimes, it’s not a half-bad idea, we guess!
Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green
These two have had a seriously tumultuous relationship! After meeting in 2004 when Brian was 30 and Megan was 18, the two began secretly dating. Within a few years span, the two had several breakups and makeups. They eventually tied the knot in 2010 and had two children before Megan filed for divorce in 2015. Reportedly, Megan’s thriving career and Brian’s spot as a “stay-at-home-dad” weren’t sitting well with him. But the split didn’t really stick considering Megan soon revealed she was pregnant with their third child and the divorce seemed to fall off the radar. Soon, the two were back living together and enjoying more family time.
Pink and Carey Hart
If you’ve ever listened to Pink’s music you’d know that this is one of those couples with a loving – but complicated – relationship timeline! The pair had two major splits in their relationship before deciding they really, truly belonged together. The first came in 2003 after a few years of dating and lasted for about a year. After they reunited, they got married and started a family, but another split was on the horizon. They broke up again in 2008, just two years after they got married. The big reason for the split? Way to much time apart. The split lasted for 11 months and during that time, Pink penned a song about their breakup – “So What.” She asked Carey to star in the music video, he agreed, and they got back together after filming! Kind of perfect, right? They’ve been happily married ever since!
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth
These two met while filming The Last Song and if you meet while filming a romance epic, you’re probably going to fall in love, too. Over the next few years, there were several splits and reconciliations, reportedly due to their schedules being way too incompatible to have a successful relationship. After all that, the couple even got engaged! A year later, in 2013, the two broke off their engagement and went separate ways. Miley came out as pansexual and dated Stella Maxwell and Patrick Schwarzenegger during their time apart; Liam reportedly dated Jennifer Lawrence. It wasn’t until three long years later that the two reunited and their engagement was back on. They’ve both expressed that they needed that time apart to grow independently, and now they seem to be in it for the long haul!
Chrissy Teigen and John Legend
This is one of our fave celeb couples of all time, but they almost didn’t end up that way! Always candid and hilarious, Teigen went on the record about a time her man tried to break up with her. In the beginning of their relationship when John was on tour, he tried to end it with the model. On Twitter, Chrissy revealed that his voice hurt and he was “being whiny!” And you know what her epic response was to his breakup request? “No.”
She was not going to let him do her like that! So these two didn’t really break up, but they show that even totally perfect couples can have a little trouble in paradise. Luckily, we now get their adorable family photos on Instagram and Chrissy blessing us with the best Tweets!
Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos
The King and Queen of soap-opera couples almost didn’t make it to their own wedding! Ripa revealed that right before their big day, the two broke up. The breakup only lasted a few days and Mark popped the question again as soon as they were back together. Kelly and Mark wound up eloping in Las Vegas to forego the wedding drama. Since meeting on the set of All My Children they’ve been one of the most unshakeable couples in Hollywood. Except for this tiny breakup! Their marriage began in 1996 and they’ve been going strong and building their family ever since.
Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel
This is one of the most grounded couples in Hollywood but a 2011 split almost ended their romance. After about four years of dating, the couple split and, according to sources, they thought their relationship had just run its course. But by the next year, the two were engaged and they married in 2012. But even to this day, Justin doesn’t like talking about the breakup and the possibility that the two may not have ended up together! We can’t blame him, we’d be lost without this precious Hollywood couple!
Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade
These cuties are definitely one of the most fun celeb couples of all time! They’re not just partners, they’re BFFs and that just totally shines through. After a few years of dating in the limelight, the two took time apart in 2013 because their conflicting schedules weren’t allowing them much time together – so Hollywood. But the breakup was short-lived; By the end of 2013, the couple was ready to walk down the aisle. The two now go down as one of the most enviable celeb couples out there! Seriously, we can’t get over how silly and in love these two are!
Hailey Baldwin and Justin Bieber
Their quick engagement in the summer of 2018 took many by surprise, but these two have had a long history. They were friends for years before getting together. Even crazier? Baldwin was a Selena Gomez-Justin Bieber shipper before she ended up with the pop star! When Selena and Justin called it quits in 2014, Justin and Hailey hooked up for the first time. Throughout 2014 and 2015, the two were seen together all the time and confirmed their relationship via Instagram in early 2016 with a smooching pic. But by the summer of 2016, they were donezo. And we all know what happened next: another Jelena reunion! But when that fizzled, it was Hailey’s time to shine again and the two reunited in the summer of 2018. In a matter of weeks, they were engaged! It seems the Biebs finally figured out what he wants and the two seem happier than ever!
Kristen Bell and Dax Shephard
One of the funniest couples of all time almost didn’t make it longer than a few months! About three months into dating, Dax sat Kristen down and let her know he wasn’t looking for anything serious and was seeing other people. Ummm… oops! He almost missed out on his future wife and baby-mama because he was scared of commitment! Luckily, Kristen reports that a mere four days later, he told her he made a massive mistake and wanted to be with her. They went on to be one of our favorite couples of all time! And while Kristen notes that their marriage is hard work, they’ve been working at it since they tied the knot in 2013.
