Marriage is hard work, whether you’re a celebrity or not. Getting married is a major decision, especially considering how many relationships end in divorce. We know that a majority of celebrity nuptials end in tough-to-watch divorces, but there are also plenty of happy celebrity couples that give us hope that love in Hollywood is still alive.
One thing that doesn’t exactly help your chances of joining the Will-and-Jadas or David-and-Victorias is getting married when you’re barely legal. It’s not a surefire disaster, but *spoiler alert* only 1/5 of these couples are still together. But whether they went to Splitville or not, all of these celebrities decided to take the marital plunge at young ages. Maybe it’s a sign of maturity, or maybe it means you’re not very mature at all, who knows! Here are 20 of the youngest stars to walk down the aisle, for better or for worse.
1. LeAnn Rimes: 19 years old
Back in the early 2000s, LeAnn Rimes was one of the hottest young stars in country music. She had a whirlwind romance with her backup dancer Dean Sheremet, and married him in 2002. She was just 19 years old at the time. They had a good run but ultimately divorced in 2010. She went on to marry Eddie Cibrian, after a major cheating scandal with his previous wife Brandi Glanville.
2. Reese Witherspoon: 23 years old
Reese Witherspoon didn’t race to get married in her teens, but 23 is still pretty young in the grand scheme of things. She married Ryan Phillippe in 1999, and the pair was together until 2007. During that time, Reese gave birth to two beautiful children, one of whom is up-and-coming actress/model Ava Phillippe.. They announced their split in 2006, though many thought if any couple could make it, it’d be then. Unfortunately, Ryan was plagued with unconfirmed rumors of infidelity. Reese remarried at 35, and now she seems to be THRIVING in all aspects of her life.
3. Bo Derek: 18 years old
Bo Derek was one of the top movie stars of the 1980s, but her marriage was barely even legal. She started dating John Derek when she was just 16, and he was a full 30 years older than her. The couple even moved to Germany to avoid the statutory rape laws in the United States. They officially got married when she turned 18, and they could finally move back to the US. The whole thing seems a little creepy, but they stayed together until he died in 1998. Bo Derek is now in a long-term relationship with actor John Corbett, but she’s never remarried.
4. Heidi Pratt: 22 years old
Who would have thought that this controversial couple from The Hills would make it all these years? Heidi Montag married Spencer Pratt when she was just 22, and not everyone was happy about it. Heidi lost her best friend, Lauren Conrad, over the relationship, but I guess finding your soulmate was worth it? They’ve been married for nearly a decade, and Heidi gave birth to their first child in 2017. Despite the drama, plastic surgery, and crazy reality TV moments, this couple really must be a perfect fit.
5. Drew Barrymore: 19 years old
Drew Barrymore was famous from a young age, and she was known for her wild ways during her teenage years. She was first engaged when she was 16, but later broke it off. Another failed engagement followed, and then she married Jeremy Thomas, a bartender from Wales, when she was 19. That’s a lot of engagements for anyone, let alone someone who isn’t even 20 yet. That first marriage lasted just two months, but Drew definitely seems a bit more romantically stable in recent years.
6. Kate Hudson: 21 years old
Who is Chris Robinson, and how did I not know that Kate Hudson has a kid with him? There are many questions here, including why Kate chose to get married at 21. Despite having a son, Ryder, together, things didn’t work out for Chris and Kate. She later had another child with Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy, and is currently pregnant with boyfriend Danny Fujikawa. Kate Hudson’s first marriage wasn’t a big success, but that hasn’t stopped her from building the perfect family that she wants.
7. Courtney Stodden: 17 years old
This list just wouldn’t be complete without Courtney Stodden. Courtney isn’t really famous for anything in particular, except marring actor Doug Hutchison. When they got married in 2011, he was 51 years old, while Courtney was just 17. Their relationship was the subject of a lot of scrutiny and ridicule, but they claimed they were truly in love, and age/money had nothing to do with it. They separated in 2013 after a few years together but quickly got back together. They ultimately announced their divorce early in 2018, and no one’s too sad about it.
8. Demi Moore: 17 years old
While most people remember Demi Moore’s high-profile marriages to Bruce Willis and Ashton Kutcher, she was married before meeting either of them. Back in 1980, she married singer Freddy Moore, when she was just 17 years old and he was 30. They divorced five years later, but Demi clearly chose to keep his last name. The marriage may not have lasted too long, but that will always be a little reminder. Also, you probably just shouldn’t get married when you’re 17.
9. Britney Spears: 22 years old (twice)
Because Britney Spears has been famous for so long, it’s easy to forget how young she was when certain things happened. Specifically, she was just 22 years old when she got married to Jason Allen Alexander for 55 hours and that same year she married Kevin Federline. The relationship, which was documented on a reality show, was pretty much a mess from the beginning. They split up four years later when Britney was in the middle of some of her worst times. Things have turned around since then, and now the two are co-parents to their two handsome sons.
10. Olivia Wilde: 19 years old
These days, Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis are one of Hollywood’s cutest couples, but they haven’t always been together. Before Jason, Olivia was married to Tao Ruspoli, who is the son of an Italian prince. That sounds pretty fancy, but he was ten years older than her, and she was just 19 when they tied the knot. That marriage came to an end in 2011, clearing the way for Jason and Olivia to find love together. He’s no Italian prince, but he’s very cute and very funny.
11. Milla Jovovich: 16 years old
I always thought you had to be 17 or 18 to get married, but a young Milla Jovovich found a way around this. When she was just 16, she married her Dazed & Confused costar Shawn Andrews, who was five years older than her. The couple only lasted a few months after the wedding, and it was quickly annulled. When I was 16, I could barely decide what to wear in the morning, so I definitely wasn’t ready to choose someone to marry. It seems like Milla wasn’t ready either, but now she’s been married for nine years to director Paul W. S. Anderson.
12. Macaulay Culkin: 17 years old
Macaulay Culkin has certainly had an interesting life. The Home Alone star married fellow young actor Rachel Miner when they were both just 17, but, unsurprisingly, it wasn’t meant to last. They separated just a few years later and officially got divorced in 2002. Following that, Macaulay famously dated Mila Kunis for eight years, until breaking up in 2010. Mila, of course, went on to marry Ashton Kutcher, while Macaulay is currently dating former Disney Channel star Brenda Song.
13. Melanie Griffith: 18 years old
It really seems like someone should have put a stop to this. Melanie Griffith was just 14 when she started dating the 22-year-old Don Johnson, whom she knew because he starred in a movie with her MOTHER. They got married when Melanie turned 18 but broke up after just six months. In a crazy turn of events, they got back together more than a decade later and were married for a second time. The second marriage lasted a respectable seven years, but I still have a lot of questions about how this relationship started in the first place.
14. Avril Lavigne: 21 years old
Pop punk queen Avril Lavigne settled down at a young age, marrying Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley when she was just 21. The couple later split up in 2010, following four years of marriage. Currently, Avril is married to Chad Kroeger, AKA the lead singer from Nickelback. The two announced their separation back in 2015, but it doesn’t appear that they’ve actually gotten divorced. It definitely seems like Avril has a type when it comes to guys.
15. Solange Knowles: 17 years old
The personal life of Solange Knowles gets way less headlines than that of her sister Beyoncé, but it’s still pretty interesting. In 2004, Solange married her high school boyfriend. She was just 17, and she gave birth to a son later that year. The marriage didn’t last long, but her son is truly adorable. In 2014, she got remarried to music video director Alan Ferguson in a beautiful ceremony in New Orleans. I’m assuming she picked her husband carefully, after seeing what she did to Jay-Z in that elevator.
16. Megan Fox: 24 years old
Megan Fox’s relationship with Brian Austin Green hasn’t always been a smooth road, but they’ve made it through. Megan was 24 when they got married back in 2010, and they quickly had three children. They hit a rough patch a few years back, which resulted in Megan filing for divorce in 2015. Somehow, they reconciled, and the plans for divorce were canceled. They’ve been through a lot together, but luckily they’ve always found a way to make it through.
17. Hilary Duff: 22 years old
Hilary Duff was just 22 when she married hockey player Mike Comrie, who is seven years her senior. They announced their divorce in 2015, and things were finalized then next year. Even though they split up, Hilary has been open about their co-parenting relationship, and they’ve even gone on vacations as a family in recent years. It’s nice to see them working together to provide the best for their son. After all this time, it’s crazy that Hilary Duff is only 30 years old, so she definitely still has plenty of time to date.
18. Angelina Jolie: 21 years old
Angelina Jolie’s personal life has always been a bit out of the ordinary. She lived with her first boyfriend when she was just 14 years old, in her mother’s house. She eventually started dating actor Jonny Lee Miller, whom she married at age 21. At the wedding, she wore a white t-shirt, on which Jonny’s name was written in her own blood. Yikes. Their relationship ended three years later in 1999, but they apparently remained on good terms. Angelina was, of course, later married to Billy Bob Thornton and Brad Pitt, but these days it appears she’s flying solo playing Superwoman and Supermom.
19. Kim Kardashian: 19 years old
We all know about Kim Kardashian’s high-profile marriage to Kris Humphries, and her even higher-profile marriage to Kanye West, but let’s go back to the beginning to hubby #1. In 2000, Kim married music producer Damon Thomas when she was just 19. This was way before the reality TV fame or A-list events, so no one even cared at the time. The marriage lasted a few years, but the E! cameras weren’t around to catch the events that surrounded the breakup. Oh boy, how things have changed.
20. Kevin Jonas: 22 years old
The eldest Jonas brother still wasn’t very old when he got married. Kevin Jonas tied the knot with Danielle Deleasa in 2009, when he had just turned 22. This was back in the days when the Jonas Brothers were wearing purity rings, so it makes sense why they were eager to get married. Kevin and Danielle starred in a reality show, Married To Jonas, and they now have two little daughters. While his younger brothers Nick and Joe get way more press coverage on who they’re dating (and the fact that they no longer wear their purity rings), Kevin seems to have it all figured out.
