Weddings are beautiful and full of love. But they can also be stressful AF. Whether it’s your own wedding or that of a friend, there’s no denying that drama will be on the horizon. It’s just a fact of life – there are so many things that can go wrong! Which is why seeing all that drama and chaos captured in a movie is kind of cathartic. It’s not just you who’s dealt with the utter disaster that wedding planning and executing can be! Plus, it’s nice to watch someone else have to navigate the craziness of getting hitched!
Wedding movies also have something else going for them: a great love story. The movies surround relationships so strong these people want to spend forever together! And what’s better than watching an epic romance play out on screen? Wedding movies tend to mix the perfect amount of hijinks with a dash of true love. And it makes them watchable any time, not just during “wedding season”! Here are some of the best wedding movies of all time that you’ll have no choice but to say “I do” to being in love with!
17. Made of Honor
This is only the type of scenario that can happen in a movie! But it gives hope to everyone everywhere who is secretly in love with their BFF! When Hannah (Michelle Monaghan) announces she’s engaged, she makes her best friend Tom (Patrick Dempsey) her maid of honor. One problem: this playboy realized right before Hannah got engaged that he’s actually in love with her! A lot of relationship sabotage ensues as Tom works to covertly show Hannah that he’s the one for her, not the man who gave her the rock on her finger. Realistically it’s kind of (totally) messed up; Tom should have just told her! But in movieland, it’s perfectly romantic and gives hope to “friendzoned” people everywhere!
16. Father of the Bride
When George’s (Steve Martin) daughter Annie (Kimberly Williams) announces she’s engaged to a man she’s known for six months, he’s, understandably, not so into it. George just doesn’t want to let go of his little girl! This movie is a great example of how parents can get just as crazy as their kids when planning a wedding! The costs, the quickness of it all, and the fact that he doesn’t want his daughter to get married all take a toll on George. But the movie shows that, no matter how crazy your family is, love will always prevail in the end! And those who love you will always find a way to be happy for your successes. Even if they get arrested while figuring that out.
15. License to Wed
This is a movie all about the lengths people will go for the perfect wedding venue! Sadie (Mandy Moore) and Ben (John Krasinski) have found the perfect venue, but the only available spot for the next two years is in three weeks! Planning a wedding in less than a month sounds like a nightmare in and of itself, but there’s another obstacle: the Reverend at the church requires them to follow a prenuptial course in order to get married there. It causes arguments, stress, and leads to the couple questioning their entire marriage! Venue-finding is an extreme sport, y’all, and this movie will teach you just that.
14. Corpse Bride
This is one dark wedding movie! But what else would you expect from the trifecta of Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, and Helena Bonham Carter?! When Victor runs to the woods to nervously practice his vows for his soon-to-be-wife, he accidentally marries a corpse bride who was murdered before her own nuptials. Whoops! Victor desperately tries to get back to the Land of the Living to be reunited with his love, but when she’s already being married off to a new man, he figures he might as well stay with his corpse bride. Romantic!
13. Bride Wars
Liv (Kate Hudson) and Emma (Anne Hathaway) have been planning their future weddings since they were kids. The two BFFs even want to get married at the same venue! Naturally, a clerical error and some unfortunate timing lead to them both booking the same venue… on the same day. This clearly means war! The two (former) BFFs try everything to sabotage one another and get the venue and the date all to themselves. And it gets nasty. Weddings can bring out the worst in people, thus the term “bridezilla”! No matter how close you are with someone, in the midst of wedding planning, you’re never going to think straight!
12. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates
This is the movie for anyone that likes a little raunch in their wedding flick! Mike (Adam Devine) and Dave (Zac Efron) need respectable dates for their sister’s wedding (thus the title), so they do something totally normal: put an ad out! But this isn’t just movie magic: the film is based on two IRL brothers who did this exact thing and put an ad on Craigslist for dates to their cousin’s wedding. The movie, obviously, takes it about 100 steps further! While the brothers want respectable dates, the girls they choose aren’t exactly perfect ladies. Hijinks ensue! They nearly ruin their sister’s wedding, but that’s what families are for, right?
11. The Wedding Planner
In true rom-com fashion Jennifer Lopez plays Mary, a woman with career ambitions only a rom-com lead can have: she wants to be partner at the wedding planning firm she works at. You can see where the movie goes from here. Mary meets a man she’s kind of crazy about… only to realize he’s the other half of the wedding she’s currently planning. Oh, rom-coms, you never disappoint. The two try to avoid their feelings together throughout the entire movie, but you can’t help feeling bad for how obviously doomed his engagement is. Because who the heck can deny J. Lo?!
10. American Wedding
Jim (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) were the surprise love story at the root of the American Pie movies. So when they eventually got engaged, fans knew tying the knot would be two things: surprisingly sweet, and unsurprisingly racy AF. What else would you expect with Stifler (Seann William Scott) involved with the wedding?! As much as they try to keep him out of the nuptials, he ends up weaseling his way in and almost ruining everything. But let’s be honest: a normal wedding for these two wouldn’t make sense, anyway! This one time at band camp two sex-crazed lovebirds got married and lived happily ever after!
9. The Wedding Date
Looking good is the best revenge. Which is why when you’re going to see your ex at you sister’s wedding, you have to look fierce and have the hottest date. Kat (Debra Messing) finds herself sans-accompaniment and decides to hire a male escort named Nick (Dermot Mulroney) to pose as her boyfriend. Obviously the two begin to actually fall for each other in the midst of all the pretending! What else would you expect?
8. 27 Dresses
Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. You all know the saying. But unlike Jane (Katherine Heigl), you probably haven’t been a bridesmaid 27 times. Can you imagine having to wear that many ugly dresses?! Though, our real question is how she has that many close friends? And how she can afford all of that? Everyone knows being a bridesmaid is expensive! But things get even worse for the perpetual bridesmaid when her sister falls in love with her boss (with whom Jane is also in love with) and the two decide to get married ASAP. Jane’s now the bridesmaid and wedding planner for her sister and secret love’s wedding!
7. Runaway Bride
Some people just aren’t made for marriage. But they still keep trying! Maggie (Julia Roberts) has left three men at the altar, and it’s gained her unwanted tabloid fame as the “Runaway Bride.” So when Ike (Richard Gere, Pretty Woman reunion alert!), a reporter, decides to follow her fourth attempt at getting hitched, he’s sure she’ll run again. Girl’s got a rep to protect after all! What neither of them expects, though, is falling for each other. This is the rallying cry of any gal who doesn’t want to commit until she’s absolutely 100% sure!
6. My Best Friend’s Wedding
Ya can’t keep Julia Roberts out of a good wedding movie! In this one, she’s not running from love, but running into it as she realizes she’s in love with her best friend who’s soon going to be marrying someone else. She spends the entire movie trying to sabotage her best friend’s wedding in hopes that he’ll realize he loves her, too. Again, IRL, we don’t recommend this approach! However, this flick’s ending may surprise you…
5. The Wedding Singer
Remember when Adam Sandler made hilarious movies?! The Wedding Singer follows a lovestruck man of that profession who ends up getting ditched at his own wedding ceremony. Depressed and inconsolable, he basically ruins several other weddings by singing sad songs instead of his jolly hits. So when he meets a waitress named Julia (rom-com QUEEN Drew Barrymore), he finds himself feeling enlivened again and ends up helping her plan her own big day despite their obvious attraction to one another. We don’t want to spoil it, but there are a few fights, a couple of songs, and a Billy Idol cameo!
4. Mamma Mia!
It’s not just an ode to ABBA songs — it’s also a great wedding movie! Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) invites three men to her wedding, all of whom carry the potential to be her birth father, and she’s got hopes of sussing out which one it is so he can walk her down the aisle. It makes for one hell of a crazy wedding weekend as Sophie tries to figure out which of these men knocked up her mom, Meryl Streep. And, naturally, there are some iconic songs along the way!
3. My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Big overbearing families are just a way of life. But they can be extra ridiculous when it comes to a wedding! When Toula (Nia Vardalos), a Greek American woman, gets engaged to protestant Ian (John Corbett), she not only has to introduce him to her huge family but help integrate him into their traditions for the wedding. Her family takes over the wedding planning like crazy people, not really caring about her input along the way. Sounds about right for most families, Greek or not!
2. Wedding Crashers
This is about as unconventional as wedding movies get. John (Owen Wilson) and Jeremy (Vince Vaughn) have a perfect scheme to get women: crash weddings, pretend you know the people getting married, and meet beautiful single women desperate for love! Foolproof, right? When they learn the Governor’s daughter is getting married, they know it’ll be a wedding not to miss. A wedding reception turns into a wedding weekend and some shenanigans. Wedding crashing is all fun and games until someone falls in love!
1. Bridesmaids
Raunchy wedding movies aren’t just for men! Annie’s (Kristen Wiig) BFF is getting married and, of course, she’s going to be the Maid of Honor. But the lead up to the wedding and the crazy bridesmaids assembled are enough to make anyone go a bit crazy. From food poisoning to jealousy of another bridesmaid, Annie isn’t having the best time helping her girl put this wedding together. And she even gets ousted as the Maid of Honor! Years of friendship aren’t thrown away so easily in the end, but that’s how stressful weddings can be/
