Face it, you’ve got a go-to movie for every emotion. When you’re feeling sappy and sweet, The Notebook is always there to give you your fill with that iconic scene of Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in the rain.
When you just want to cry your heart out, perhaps you’re all about The Perks of Being a Wallflower or The Titantic to get those tears flowing.
While wanting to dwell on the feels when you’re feeling ~emotional~ is totally normal, I think we can all probably agree that you need to be in the mood for those types of flicks. Comedy though? There’s never a time where a funny movie isn’t what you’re looking for — as long as the film is actually good and not some slap-sticky and slightly offensive over-the-top “comedy” that hardly gives you a good chuckle.
That’s why when you find a LOL-worthy comedy, you never get sick of it. The laughs keep coming and you even notice things you hadn’t seen in your first viewing during your countless re-watches. These are 18 flicks we could watch over and over again and never grow tired of, solidifying their status in the comedy film hall of fame.
1. Legally Blonde
Honestly, what’s there not to love about this Reese Witherspoon comedy? Not only does it have a star-studded cast pairing Reese with Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Jennifer Coolidge and The Vampire Diaries‘ Matthew Davis — but it’s also got a totally inspiring story.
Elle Woods goes to Harvard Law to win her ex-boyfriend back who never took her seriously. But along the way, Elle finds herself excelling in her program and forming close bonds with her manicurist and other women surrounding her. She refuses to take sh*t from anybody and has given us some pretty quote-worthy lines about the effects of exercise, how anything is possible if you believe in yourself and why you can’t take a shower after getting a perm. It’s, quite frankly, a feminist classic, and if you don’t watch it at least once a month then you’re missing out.
2. Scary Movie 2
Sequels are usually a hell of a lot worse than the original and most often, one viewing is more than enough. But then there are movies like Scary Movie 2. Forget the first, the third, the fourth and so on. It’s all about the second installment because Anna Faris and Marlon Wayans are absolutely amazing. That said, it’s Hanson (played by Chris Elliot) with that little “strong hand” in the dessert that takes the cake each and every freaking time though.
3. Dumb and Dumber
TFW you know a movie is absolutely ridiculous but you still watch it on repeat anyway? Yeah, Dumb and Dumber is one of those movies. We don’t care so much for the ones that came after, we were happy with just the first. We can just watch this one until the day we die. With Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, this is peak ’90s and we loved it.
4. The 40-Year-Old Virgin
KELLY CLARKSON! Dare we say more? Okay, we will. Did you know that The Office was actually struggling, but it was our undeniable love for this movie that helped not only Steve Carell become a household name, but got people to give the NBC hit another chance? So we have The 40-Year-Old Virgin to thank for every hilarious The Office moment as well. THANK YOU.
5. Men in Black
If there is one thing about the ’90s that was always on point, it was Will Smith in a summer blockbuster. This movie may have turned 20 this year (which also WTF), but we still laugh like it’s the most recent film in theaters every time we see it.
6. Zombieland
Everyone always wants to assume that zombies have to be scary. Nah, they can actually bring a lot of humor to the table. When people like Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, and Woody Harrelson are teamed up, zombies are no problem-o. Oh yeah, and Bill Murray, too! How could we forget?
7. Tommy Boy
Chris Farley is a comedic legend that the world lost way too soon. Thankfully, he lives on in one of the best comedy movies ever, Tommy Boy. Alongside David Spade, these two were gold. Fat guy in a little coat, the deer ruining their car, and Spade’s toupee. We can’t get enough.
8. 21 Jump Street
There are still people out there who want to hate on Channing Tatum, but dude is hilarious. Sure, we loved him for Magic Mike, but he was most definitely the comedic scene stealer in 21 Jump Street. Of course, it didn’t hurt that he had Jonah Hill as his partner in fighting crime.
9. She’s the Man
Okay, I’m sorry — but while we’re talking about Channing, we’ve got to talk about She’s the Man. In what just might be Amanda Bynes‘ most hilarious role ever (and that’s saying something), we see Viola go in disguise as her brother, Sebastian to his new boarding school so she can continue playing soccer after the team at her school gets cut. It’s based on a Shakespeare play, so you know there’s a lot of romantic confusion and hilarious hijinx, but it’s a movie that makes you laugh about a thousand times and makes you think. Plus, this was the source of the whole tampon-in-your-nose joke — so you can thank Amanda for that.
10. Clueless
Like we’d ever leave this off a list like this. As if! Clueless is as essential to our life as breathing and eating. Doesn’t hurt that Cher Horowitz delivers some of the funniest lines and she doesn’t even realize it in most cases. Sure, we’re always going to be a little confused about the whole step brother thing, but we look past it because if Paul Rudd were our step brother, we’d probably try to get with him, too.
11. Superbad
Perhaps Jonah Hill is the key to our ultimate happiness because he landed on here twice. You can’t blame us though because if you love 21 Jump Street, then you have to love Superbad just as much – if not more. Virgins trying to get their freak on before graduation. That’s always a great plot for a movie that’ll get laughs and it gets a ton from us. Plus, McLovin seals the deal, right?
12. Napoleon Dynamite
Sometimes the simplest movie can make the biggest comedic impact. Those jokes aren’t even grand but they absolutely kill us. We cannot stop thinking about Tina, Deb and that final dance routine. Someone get us our DVD right now!
13. Bubble Boy
Jake Gyllenhaal has done a lot of great roles. He’s like a legit A-list actor, but when it all boils down – Bubble Boy is his best role. Maybe because it’s the weirdest thing he’s ever done? We don’t really know, but we’ll watch it every time it’s on TV. That’s for sure.
14. Bridesmaids
Want a dose of girl power in the form of hilarity? That’s when you pop in a copy of Bridesmaids and just have at it. Kristen Wiig not only delivered comedy with Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, and Wendi McLendon-Covey by her side – but also delivered a whole lot of heart.
15. Shrek
This is the only animated comedy that made the list so you know it’s got to be good. Shrek has a special place in our hearts and always will. It looks like a kids’ movie but when you look back, there are a lot more grown-up jokes you somehow never heard as a kid.
16. Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls
Is it weird that we feel Jim Carrey is at his best when exiting the behind of a fake rhino while also stark naked? Yeah, we think it’s weird too but it is the truth. That moment and the rest of the movie have been making lives better since 1995. If you weren’t DYING laughing when you watched basically any Ace Ventura film, then there’s something SERIOUSLY wrong with you.
17. Zoolander
The truth is that many didn’t see this movie in theaters when it came out. Though it wasn’t a box office hit, it’s been a blockbuster ever since. Once we were able to watch it at home, we realized what we’d been missing out on something truly amazing and we haven’t looked back since. We did, however, get bummed when they made that horrendous sequel. To this day, we still have those odd moments when a friend tells you shamefully that they’ve never seen Zoolander and you feel slightly embarrassed for them.
18. Mean Girls
If there’s a day that goes by where you’re not quoting Mean Girls, are you even living? This film went from a teen movie classic to a worldwide phenomenon real quick and for good reason. The cattiness of The Plastics paired with the disdain of Lindsay Lohan’s outcast trio was perfection. While everyone was great, we can all agree that it was Amanda Seyfried’s Karen that you couldn’t help but really feel for. Like this gem, “You wanna do something fun? You wanna go to Taco Bell?”
