6 Actors Quotes About Filming Sex Scenes

Heyyy, you look like you’d like to talk about sex right about now. I can’t see you, true. But I’m getting internet vibes from you. And what kind of professional Online Vibe Reader would I be if I didn’t pick up on them and do my part to help? My thinking is that, if you want to talk about sex and you factor in my constant need to be talking about celebrities, talking about celebrity sex is double the fun like a Doublemint commercial from the ’90s.

Now, we could go on and on about celebrities sharing way too much about their own sex lives. In fact, we literally have. But what I really want to hear about is what it’s like to film those sex scenes that are out there corrupting the youth of America. We’ve heard that they’re super awkward to film for the first time. But, apparently, it isn’t always up from there when it’s time for the second, third, or thousandth.

1. Kerry Washington

You’d never guess just by watching one of her notoriously intimate sex scenes with President Fitzgerald “I’m An Adulterer” Grant, but Kerry’s not really into the whole deal:

“They’re hard to do. You’re doing things that you’re supposed to do with only certain people in your life. Because this is not your real partner in life, doing that is awkward. And then doing it in a room full of people is awkward.” – to Us Magazine

2. Ryan Gosling

In case you thought that filming a sex scene was going to be anything less than clinical, allow Ryan to dash those dreams for you real quick:

“Actors become very professional and proficient about watching out for each other’s light and not stepping on each other’s lines. All of these things are artificial, and you have to strip that away if you’re going to achieve a sense of intimacy. In real life sex is messy… “ – to W Magazine

3. Eddie Redmayne

Eddie can barely hold it together when filming sex scenes because it’s all very ridiculous, really:

“You always think with those sorts of scene ‘How do actors do it?’ The answer is it’s as awkward as if you were to do it. There’s a moment at the end of the scene [in Savage Grace] where Tom Kalin keeps the camera on top of us and we all sort of all kiss each other and burst into hysterics. That was completely natural hysteria, “What just happened?!?” – TheFilmExperience.com

4. Jake Gyllenhaal

It sounds a lot like Jake gets turned on by his sex scenes. Which isn’t totally bizarre because, even though your mind knows it’s fake, your body is like, “Oh, it’s time to party already?! I hadn’t prepared, but I — you know what, I can just wing it. It’s fine, let’s go”:

“There’s, like, this little door that you open up and you’re like, “You down?” “Yeah, I’m down-let’s do it.” And the door closes when the scene ends. Yeah, it’s sexy when we’re doing it. And then it stops.” – Entertainment Weekly

5. Anne Hathaway

Anne spoke painfully about allll of that Love and Other Drugs she had with her turned on co-star Jake Gyllenhaal:

“The lack of clothing meant that there wasn’t a lot of padding, so I was constantly bruised. That scene that you were just describing? I had a welt on my knee.” – Entertainment Weekly

6. Emmy Rossum

If you didn’t know, Emmy has A BUNCH of sex on HBO’s Shameless. I want to make a pun about how she was actually shameful about the sex scenes, but I’m feeling pretty good about myself today and I don’t want to ruin things:

“I was really nervous about it at first. The first time we did it, I had to have a beer or two. But you actually find that you get frighteningly comfortable with it after a very short amount of time. We like it to be realistic but not real. So I wear what I like to call a vadge-pad. It’s like a little triangular panty liner than you stick to yourself and the guy wears a sock. – On Chelsea Lately
