While some people refuse to kiss and tell, these celebrities aren’t afraid to share all the juicy details about their awful on-screen kisses! It’s no secret that kissing scenes in Hollywood can be straight up uncomfortable for everyone involved. No matter how romantic it may seem to the viewers on screen, behind the camera there are loads of crew members, other actors, and too many people for comfort. So, most actors try to make the situation as little awkward as it can be (rumor has it Chace Crawford is really, really good at that). But when it comes down to it, kissing someone for the sake of a movie just isn’t always as dreamy as you think it might be.
While we’ve all heard celebs talk about how awkward it is to kiss their co-star in front of the camera, these celebs can’t help but spill the tea on their kissing horror stories. Talk about loose lips! You’ll be shocked to see who are some of Hollywood’s worst (and sloppiest!) kissers. Keep reading to see which actors are bad at kissing… according to their co-stars!
Robert Pattinson
Back in the height of his Twilight fame, pretty much any girl would donate a kidney to kiss Robert Pattinson. Well, every girl except for Reese Witherspoon, that is. The two played love interests in the 2011 drama Water for Elephants, and Reese has said Robert wasn’t *exactly* the best at kissing. Rob apparently had a bad cold while filming their kissing scene, and he had a nasty case of a runny nose. Reese confirmed to MTV that these factors made their kiss pretty cringe-worthy, saying, “It wasn’t appealing; it wasn’t pleasant.”
Orlando Bloom
Keira Knightley is the lucky lady who got to smooch both Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, and she didn’t hold back on who’s the better smoocher. When InStyle quizzed her on which guy was the better kisser, she said, “Johnny Depp certainly wasn’t bad” aaaand said nothing about the Lord of the Rings guy. Meanwhile, Orlando praised Keira, saying, “She’s a great kisser and a lovely and very funny person. She’s absolutely gorgeous.” Yikes!
Angelina Jolie
She’s one of Hollywood’s most famous (and hottest, tbh) actresses, but don’t let that fool you – James McAvoy says Angelina Jolie isn’t that great at kissing. The two played love interests in Wanted back in 2008, but James didn’t hold back when tellinginTouch that their kiss was less than romantic. “I can tell you what it was like to kiss her on a film set: It was awkward, sweaty and not very nice. There was angst involved in that, as always. I don’t think Brad Pitt felt threatened for one moment.”
Brat Pitt
Kirsten Dunst will be on this list later, but when she kissed Brad Pitt while filming Interview with a Vampire, she was only 11 years old – and he was 29 at the time. …Yeah. About the kiss, Kirsten told Bullet magazine, “Everyone at the time as like, ‘you’re so lucky you kissed Brad Pitt,’ but I thought it was disgusting.” She didn’t kiss anyone else until she was 16 years old and, TBH, having an actual child kiss a full-grown adult for a movie would never fly these days.
Shailene Woodley
Shailene Woodley had some interesting pre-kiss rituals according to her The Spectacular Now co-star Miles Teller. Before their on screen smooch, Shailene opted not for minty gum, but rather Chinese dirt supplements. “Before our first kissing scene, Shailene took these Chinese dirt supplements and shoved them in her mouth. It’s like a dirt pouch, and it smells like crap,” he toldVariety. “She always has a mason jar and 100% of the time it smells like crap.” Now that’s a scent we’d rather not smell… especially while locking lips.
Sienna Miller
Sienna Miller and James Franco played newlyweds in the 2008 rom-com Camille, but they didn’t have that *newlywed bliss* vibe on set. Sienna had a bad toothache at the time, and James said that affected their kissing scenes. “I think we kissed once in that film and it wasn’t at all intense – no rolling around or anything,” he said. “Sienna’s molar was giving her pain so she called the dentist!” Celebrities are just like us, right?
James Franco
While James Franco may not have been impressed with Sienna Miller’s on-screen lip lock, he’s allegedly not the best kisser, either! Zoey Deutch, his co-star from the 2016 comedy Why Him?, blasted him for his bad kissing skills on an episode of What What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. A fan asked her what is was like to kiss the famous Franco brother, and she responded with a simple “meh,” to which Andy asked, “Really? Not great?” Again, Zoey gave a flat out “No.” When asked if it was memorable, she said it was “very not memorable.” And his breath? “Actually not good.” Looks like James doesn’t have much room to judge!
Jason Segel
On screen, Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan played a loving husband and wife couple on How I Met Your Mother. But off-screen, Alyson wasn’t really feeling the love. At the time, Jason was a heavy smoker and his bad breath almost drove Alyson to quit the show because she couldn’t stand kissing him. “I cannot stand cigarette smoke. It’s like kissing an ashtray and he’s trying to be polite by having gum or mints, but it doesn’t help,” she said. In the end, Alyson actually helped her on-screen hubby quit smoking altogether (probably making their kissing scenes much easier to film).
Woody Allen
Helena Bonham Carter isn’t a fan of kissing Woody Allen, and she’s not afraid to make it known. When describing their kiss in the 1995 rom-com Mighty Aphrodite, she explained just how much work goes into a kissing scene with her co-star. “He tells you up front certain ways of kissing he does not want. No exchange of liquid is permitted. It can be a bit offensive because he makes no effort at all. It’s like kissing the Berlin Wall.”
Tom Cruise
According to Thandie Newton, who co-starred in Mission: Impossible 2 with Tom Cruise, the real impossible mission was kissing her on-screen man. Apparently, his kisses were so sloppy that they actually had to reshoot them because they were so bad. “Kissing Tom Cruise was slightly icky and sort of wet,” she said. “I’d really go home at the end of the day actually moaning about…how many times we had to do it.” Ick!
Emma Watson
Emma Watson is a self-proclaimed bad kisser in this case! She told MTV that her nerves got the best of her when she had to kiss Rupert Grint in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. “I was like, ‘Do I use tongue? Do I not use tongue? Do I cover my teeth? What do I do? Do I go first? Oh my God!’” When it came time to actually shoot the scene, she was so anxious that she “pounced” on Rupert, saying, “I was so desperate to get it over.” Even Rupert was shocked at her urgency. “It took me by surprise,” he said. Luckily, though, their on-screen chemistry was so good that no one could even tell how awkward they felt.
Bradley Cooper
Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence clearly have good chemistry. They’ve starred in four movies together, and while many fans are rooting for a relationship, the two have always vowed they’ll always just be friends. But that didn’t stop Jen from criticizing Bradley’s kissing abilities! While on The Graham Norton Show, Bradley spilled that Jen had some harsh words for their kiss in Silver Linings Playbook. “After the second take, she said, ‘You’re a wet kisser.’ You don’t want to hear that. It was not a compliment.” Luckily they seemed to have figured out a way to make it work because they keep making movies together!
Jennifer Lawrence
While Jennifer Lawrence criticized Bradley Cooper for being a wet kisser, it sounds like she doesn’t have much room to complain! Josh Hutcherson had a very distinct way of describing his Hunger Games co-star’s kisses on an episode of Live with Kelly and Michael. “It was very slobbery,” he said when “There was fluid here, fluid here and fluid here. And then when we kissed, it was just fluids.” And to think, these two kissed a lot over the entire course of the Hunger Games franchise! Their other co-star, Liam Hemsworth confirmed Josh’s claims. “Anytime I had to kiss [Jennifer Lawrence] was pretty uncomfortable… She’s one of my best friends, I love her, but if we had a kissing scene, she would make a point of eating garlic or tuna fish or something that was disgusting. Right before the scene, she’d be like, ‘Yeah, I ate tuna,’ or ‘I had garlic, and I didn’t brush my teeth.’ And I’d be like, ‘Fantastic, I can’t wait to get in there and taste it!’”
Steve Carell
Steve Carell and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson shared a kiss at the end of their spy movie Get Smart to get some laughs from the audience, but the experience wasn’t so enjoyable for The Rock. In fact, it was so bad that he compared Steve’s mouth to a cat litter. “So the bottom of a cat’s paw – the soft supple part underneath – that’s what Steve Carell’s lips are like,” he said. “But his tongue is like kitty cat litter. That’s the physical experience.”
Kate Hudson
Even though Kate Hudson is considered the queen of rom-com movies, Dane Cook wasn’t so impressed with her kissing skills. He played Kate’s love interest in My Best Friend’s Girl, and when asked about her kissing skills on an episode of Watch What Happens Live, he didn’t leave much to the imagination. “I did a movie with her, My Best Friend’s Girl, and I think she purposely ate like a feast of onions before our scene,” he said. “I had to burn her on that one!” We’re cringing just thinking about it.
Leonardo DiCaprio
Pretty much everyone has probably dreamed of kissing Leonardo DiCaprio… except for Virginie Ledoyen, that is. The French actress had a kissing scene with Leo in the movie The Beach, but she went so far as to say that not only was the kiss bad, it was forgettable, too. “I think Leonardo is a nice guy. But I don’t want him as a lover. There was no honest passion,” she said. “No real sensitivity in our love scenes. In our underwater love scenes, all I could think of was not drowning. I can’t even remember his kiss.” *Cue the tears.*
Harrison Ford
Helen Mirren isn’t the only lady in Hollywood who isn’t impressed by Harrison Ford’s kissing ability. She starred alongside the actor in the 1986 drama The Mosquito Coast, and they seem to have struggled through their smooching scenes. She said he’s “the nicest, sweetest guy you could want to meet. But he can’t kiss – he finds it impossible to kiss on screen.” As for her fellow Hollywood friends? “He’s probably not very good off-screen either. It’s not just me – other actresses agree. Whenever we get chatting off the screen and we get around to talking, we come to the same conclusion,” she spilled.
Kirsten Dunst
Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst had one of the most iconic movie kisses of all time in Spider-Man. You know, the scene in the pouring rain where Mary Jane pulls back Spider-Man’s mask (while he’s upside down) to plant one on him? While it definitely looked good on screen, it wasn’t so easy to film. In fact, it was pretty uncomfortable for Tobey. He told Parade about the messy situation: “Probably the hardest thing I’ve had to do as Spider-Man was kiss Kirsten Dunst. When we shot that scene where we kissed in the alleyway and I was hanging upside down, it was really late at night, it was raining, and the whole time I had rainwater running up my nose,” he said. “Then, when Kirsten rolled back the wet mask, she cut off the air completely.” Thanks to some move magic, though, the kiss looks great to us! It even won the MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss in 2003, so hopefully, all their struggles were worth it.
