Yes, he’s the 45th president of the United States. But it’s no secret that Donald Trump isn’t everyone’s favorite person. Likely the most divisive man in office since our country’s origins, the businessman-turned-political-figure rubs a lot of people the wrong way — and many of these people are famous.
Trump likes to pick fights on social media (he’s done so since long before he became POTUS). And many celebrities will fight back. Not gonna lie, we kind of love it. These are wild political times, to be sure.
18. Chrissy Teigen
Model and social media slayer Chrissy Teigen has never kept her political opinions to herself … and we love her for it. This extends to the Trump administration and the prez himself. She always has a creative way of shutting him down.
In February 2017, Trump tweeted, “We must keep “evil” out of our country!” Teigen snarkily replied, “what time should we call your Uber?” And that’s just one of many comebacks she’s offered 45.
17. Cher
This Canadian songstress has a strange style of tweeting, but we respect her just the same. Cher is very adamantly against Trump and everything he stands for, and she always has something to say about whatever is going on politically at the time.
But sometimes, she just wants to hit him where it hurts. During his presidential campaign, the subject of the size of Trump’s hands came up frequently, as did his weight. Cher’s contribution? This simple tweet: “Trumps in great shape from the Wrists Down.” Burn!
16. J.K. Rowling
The acclaimed author of the Harry Potter franchise is definitely not a fan of the United States president. Despite residing in the U.K., J.K. Rowling has felt the sting of the administration from across the ocean. She, of course, shares her opinions on Brexit and the like, but her locale doesn’t stop her from chiming in when it comes to U.S. politics, too.
Trump has gotten defensive more than once about his polls, calling networks like CNN “fake news.” Rowling responded to one of his tweets on the subject, asking, “Can you imagine the number of mirrors this man must have smashed?” She’s so creative – but then again, duh!
15. Katy Perry
Things are very tense these days, but in the weeks just after Trump was elected, everyone was seriously on edge about the impending administration. This applies not only to Trump, but his vice president, Mike Pence.
After Pence attended a performance of the hit musical Hamilton and was taken to task by the cast, Trump tweeted, calling them “rude” and demanding that they apologize. Pop star Katy Perry was one person who chose to respond, turning the tables on Trump and suggesting that he should be the one to say he’s sorry for his “divisive, racist, xenophobic rhetoric.” She finished the tweet, #thanksgivingdayclapback.”
14. Kim Kardashian West
The first lady of reality TV had words for the president. Though the stars of Keeping Up with the Kardashians tend to stay out of politics and focus on their personal brand, everyone has a line.
Kim Kardashian West, whose husband, Kanye West famously supported Trump at one point, was unhappy with the president’s lack of action after Hurricane Maria hit in September 2017. When he tweeted to the people of Puerto Rico, “Do not believe the #FakeNews!” Kardashian-West pointed out the flaw in his logic: “They don’t have power to watch the news!!! Please stop tweeting & golfing while people are dying! Please step up & help!”
13. Rosie O’Donnell
A lot of us have strong opinions about Trump, but few of us have been verbally attacked by him the way Rosie O’Donnell has. Even before he took office, they had a feud, and though he had a lot more on his mind, he still found time to dig at her.
Apparently, though, he couldn’t take what he dished out. In July 2017, Trump blocked O’Donnell on Twitter. Her thoughts? “awww @realdonaldtrump – i get it – its too tough to read the truth … poor baby – i understand don – u take care of u – friend #BLOCKED.” It doesn’t seem like it’s much skin off her back.
12. Madonna
She may be a self-professed “Material Girl,” but Madonna is definitely a lot more than meets the eye. We’ve seen her take on various causes, adopt a number of children, and now, take on the president when he bullies her pal.
Madonna and O’Donnell starred in A League of Their Own together many years ago, and apparently, their bond stuck. After one of his many attacks on O’Donnell pre-election day, Madonna tweeted a photo of the two women in the film, and wrote, “Mess with my girl Rosie and you’re messing with me!!! Cruelty never made anyone a winner. #rebelhearts4ever.” Sadly, she was wrong in this case, but what a wonderful, positive message.
11. Arnold Schwarzenegger
Prior to his presidential campaign, most of Trump’s TV appearances were limited to his reality show, The Apprentice. After leaving the show to run for office, Trump left it in the hands of another celebrity-politician host: Arnold Schwarzenegger. But unlike most who pass a torch, he couldn’t do so diplomatically.
Shortly before being sworn in, Trump tweeted about the show’s poor ratings since Schwarzenegger took over. The former California governor took the classy road in his response, tweeting, “There’s nothing more important than the people’s work, @realDonaldTrump…I wish you the best of luck and I hope you’ll work for ALL of the American people as aggressively as you worked for your ratings.” Sounds like someone took Michelle Obama’s “when they go low, we go high” speech to heart.
10. Lady Gaga
The riots in Charlottesville, VA, in August 2017 drew a very deliberate line when it comes to politics versus decency for many public figures. It became clear quickly that if you supported those rallying in the name of white supremecy, you were not on the right side of history.
Of course, Trump had to take it a different way, saying there were “good people on both sides.” Among those who were outraged by this comment was Lady Gaga, who tweeted out a poll to her followers, asking, “Do you think @realDonaldTrump @POTUS saying ‘both sides are to blame’ in #Charlottesville makes him a racist supporter? Yes or no?” 62% said yes.
9. Rihanna
Sometimes, you don’t even have to call Trump out by name or the specific action he took for people to know you’re talking about him. Musical superstar and all-around goddess Rihanna, who has quite a social media following, is another celeb who speaks her mind online. When she wants to talk about someone, she does it.
In January 2017, just a week after Trump was sworn in, she tweeted, “Disgusted! The news is devastating! America is being ruined right before our eyes! What an immoral pig you have to be to implement such BS!!” At the time, we probably would have known exactly what atrocity Rihanna was referring to, but considering how much has happened in the year since, it could be almost anything. What we do know is that it’s definitely about the president.
8. Miley Cyrus
Singer and actress Miley Cyrus has undergone her share of transformations over the years. But when it comes to politics, it seems like her compass has always been pointed to the left. She was an outspoken Hillary Clinton supporter, and she has expressed her anger toward the right side of the aisle on more than one occasion.
Before Trump had even scored the Republican nomination, Cyrus was firmly against him. She shared a photo on Instagram in March 2016 of him leading in the polls ahead of Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz. She reacted saying, “gonna vom / move out da country. #aintapartyindausaanymo.”
7. Lin-Manuel Miranda
After the Hamilton incident, it would surprise exactly no one to learn that the man behind the musical, Lin-Manuel Miranda is not on the Trump train. But he held his tongue and kept things civil for the most part — that is, until Hurricane Maria.
You see, Miranda is of Puerto Rican ancestry, and his grandparents are still there. So he immediately jumped into action to help after the hurricane. Of course, he hoped the president would do the same. When Trump tweeted about the rift between him and the mayor of San Juan, Miranda delivered a powerful blow telling 45, “You’re going straight to hell … No long lines for you … They’ll clear a path.”
6. Shonda Rhimes
She’s the woman behind the most popular night on TV. And Shonda Rhimes didn’t get where she is today by keeping quiet, especially when it comes to women’s rights.
Trump has taken different stances on abortion over the years, but toward the end of his campaign, he made a comment that both confused and upset a lot of people about late-term abortions. Rhimes schooled him, tweeting, “ FYI: ‘ripping baby from womb in 9th month’ is called C-section. #VaginaEducation.”
5. Stephen Colbert
In the fall of 2017, a reckoning began. Following the publication of two news stories regarding the sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein, more and more names began to be called into question. Among them, naturally, was that of President Trump, who had been accused of sexual assault even before he was elected as president.
Stephen Colbert, late night host and requisite mocker of the GOP, tweeted out this message when Trump returned back to the U.S. after a trip to Asia: “Welcome home, @RealDonaldTrump! While you were gone we started actually punishing people for sexual harassment so, you know, heads up.”
4. Laverne Cox
It’s nearly impossible to keep track of the number of outrageous and harmful things Trump has said and tried to do in office. In August 2017, he continued to cater to the right with the ban on allowing transgender individuals into the armed forced. And, like so many other motions, this one brought with it a lot of anger from the American people.
Transgender actress and activist Laverne Cox spoke up in a lengthy post on her Instagram page. She wrote about how the ban categorizes transgender people as “second class citizens,” and expanded upon how the current administration is causing physical and psychological harm to trans individuals. Her eloquent and powerful manifesto is a perfect example of killing them with kindness and strength.
3. Demi Lovato
Nope, she’s definitely not sorry. Singer Demi Lovato has come up against plenty of haters over her lengthy showbiz career, and she’s not afraid to shake things up by saying what she means.
When Time Magazine published its “Person of the Year” issue, sexual assault survivors and members of the #MeToo movement were front and center. But Lovato was quick to point out the hypocrisy, tweeting, “Time mag highlights brave women coming forward against sexual assault on the cover but names a man with sexual assault allegations against him runner up to person of the year.. Really @TIME? #hypocrites.” It’s hard to argue with her there.
2. Ben Stiller
Despite what his convincing performances may lead you to believe, Ben Stiller is no fool. The accomplished actor and producer has us cracking up most of the time, but he knows when to be serious.
After Trump’s speech regarding the Charlottesville protests, Stiller was, like so many of us, baffled. He tweeted, “Just watched the entire Trump news conference. Worst message I have ever heard a president put out to the world.” That very succinctly sums it up.
1. Bette Midler
Though many issues have waxed and waned in popularity over Trump’s eventful term so far, none has come back around more often than the investigation into collusion with Russia during the 2016 election. As more and more information is brought to light, it has become increasingly unfathomable that this man is truly our president.
Actress Bette Midler summed it up nicely: “Honest to God, I’d make a better President than this guy, and I’m about clueless! At least I’d have the good sense not to blab to the enemy!”
