Memorial Day came and went. June is coming fast! The flavors of Summer are no longer just fantasies–they’re upon us. Melon juice, here I come.
Right now, New York is starting to heat up and get wickedly humid, so I’m looking to cool myself down and stay hydrated with fruits and veggies. Though I hate to sweat, I love eating colorful salads, soups and smoothies. Just thinking about snacking on nutrient rich and soothing fruit and vegetables helps me dread Summertime less. I already have crunchy-fresh French Breakfast Radishes chilling in my refridgerator. Later today, I’m going to slice them up, put some sea salt on them and go to town.
Here’s a list of early Summer fruits and vegetables that are in season:
- Arugula
- Asparagus
- Broccoli
- Cabbage
- Carrots
- Chard
- Corn
- Fava Beans
- Green Beans
- Green Garlic
- Kale
- Kohlrabi
- Lettuce
- Mint
- Morels
- Mushrooms (wild)
- Oregano
- Parlsey
- Pea Greens
- Radishes
- Ramps
- Rhubarb
- Scallions
- Spinach
- Spring Onions
- Stinging Nettles
- Strawberries
- Swiss Chard
- Thyme
- Zucchini Blossoms
Eating produce that’s in-season for your region is good for the planet, good for local farmers and will help keep your body comfortable in your climate. If it’s tough to get fresh and local fare, there’s no shame in going for canned or frozen options. Keep yourself nourished and take care of your body first.
